The Uniquely Abled Academy at De Anza College was built around a straightforward but often overlooked idea: high-functioning neurodiverse adults can be excellent CNC machinists — they just need a training pathway designed for how they learn, not a generic one they’re expected to fit into.
The 11-week, full-time program trains a small cohort — up to 10 students at a time — as CNC (computer numerically controlled) operators, covering everything from manual machining and print reading to CNC mill and lathe operation, backed by industry-recognized credentials including NIMS and Haas Mill Operator certifications. The first cohort ran through summer 2025. Nine students started. Nine finished — a 100% completion rate — and seven of the nine are now working in CNC machining or manufacturing roles.

None of that happens without the wraparound support built into the program’s design. Jay Nolan Community Services provides dedicated support services for the cohort, and the San Jose Department of Rehabilitation and Department of Developmental Services help connect students to the funding and services that make a full-time, hands-on training program possible for participants who might not otherwise have access to it.
This is exactly the kind of employer-aligned, accessibility-forward pathway BACCC works to highlight regionally: a model already proven at other sites nationally, now adapted for the Bay Area’s advanced manufacturing workforce needs, and built from day one around who the program is meant to serve rather than retrofitted afterward.
A 100% completion rate and direct employment for the large majority of graduates are strong numbers on their own. For a program built specifically to open a career path that’s too often closed off, they’re proof the model works — and a strong case for expanding it to future cohorts.
