Exploring a Collaborative Bachelor of Science Degree in Emerging Creative Technology

Closing Equity Gaps in High-Wage Occupations

No California community college currently offers a collaborative online bachelor’s degree in emerging creative technology. Most four-year programs are cost-prohibitive or limited to private institutions creating significant barriers for first-generation and low-income students.

Project Description

The demand for skilled professionals in emerging creative technologies, including virtual production, real-time rendering, Mixed Reality, Generative AI, and interactive digital media, is rapidly growing, with median annual salaries often exceeding $99,000. These technologies are reshaping not only entertainment industries like film and animation, but also healthcare, product design, architecture, and broadcast media.

The Need

While six Bay Area community colleges already collaborate through the Regional Virtual Production Academy (RVPA) to offer stackable certificates and associate degrees in virtual production, students currently lack a clear, affordable pathway to a bachelor’s degree in this field. Most four-year programs are cost-prohibitive or limited to private institutions. No California community college currently offers a collaborative online bachelor’s degree in this space.

Project Purpose

This two-year planning project explores the feasibility of developing a collaborative Bachelor of Science degree in Emerging Creative Technology, building on the RVPA’s existing infrastructure, curriculum, and inter-college partnerships.

Measurable Goal

An estimated 2,381 students across Bay Area ICT/Digital Media programs will be positively impacted gaining awareness of career opportunities, increased course access, and clearer pathways toward a B.S. in Emerging Creative Technology. Target sector jobs (real-time 3D artists, AR/VR specialists, AI-integrated content developers) offer median annual salaries exceeding $99,000.

BACCC Priorities

Collaboration & Coordination in Critical Occupations · Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

Supports BACCC Goal B (meeting employer needs for well-qualified candidates in high-demand fields) and Goal C (equity in participation and completion) by building a multi-college collaborative pathway into high-wage ICT/Digital Media careers with an intentional focus on expanding access for underrepresented students who face the greatest barriers to four-year education.

Vision 2030 Connection

Strategic Direction 1: Equitable Baccalaureate Attainment · Strategic Direction 2: Equitable Workforce and Economic Development

Directly aligns with Vision 2030 Outcomes 1 (Completion), 2 (Baccalaureate Attainment), and 4 (Workforce/Living Wage). Supports the Chancellor’s vision of community college baccalaureate degrees as equitable on-ramps to high-wage careers, particularly for students in communities underserved by four-year institutions.
