Bay Area Summer CyberCamps
From Classroom to Career: Building the K-14 Cybersecurity Pipeline
The Bay Area Summer CyberCamps program creates a seamless pathway from middle school curiosity to community college enrollment and beyond. By engaging grades 8–14 students in hands-on cybersecurity learning and connecting them directly to college ICT programs, the program builds a sustainable regional talent pipeline in one of the Bay Area’s highest-demand sectors. At the same time, the program creates immediate workforce development opportunities for current community college students by hiring them as Camp Ambassadors and Teaching Assistants, giving them real-world experience in instruction, technical support, and program coordination that directly prepares them for careers in cybersecurity and technology.
Project Description
The Bay Area Summer CyberCamps program engages grades 8–14 students in hands-on cybersecurity learning through a network of 18+ college and school partners across the Bay Region. Offering Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced, and All-Female camp tracks, the program builds a pipeline of cybersecurity-ready students into community college ICT pathways while connecting college student camp technicians and teaching assistants with real workforce opportunities. The program also sustains a year-round Bay Area Cyber League competition structure that keeps students engaged beyond the summer.

The Need
Industry demand for cybersecurity and ICT-skilled workers continues to far exceed supply in the Bay Area and nationally. The region’s ICT/Digital Media sector faces a gap between employer demand and college program supply annually for middle-skill IT occupations. At the same time, women and historically underrepresented students remain significantly underrepresented in the cybersecurity talent pipeline, limiting both equity and the region’s ability to meet workforce demand.

Engage 660 students across 18+ partner colleges and schools in summer CyberCamps including up to 540 students in Introductory and Intermediate camps, 80 in Advanced regional camps, and 40 in a virtual All-Female camp creating a direct pipeline into Bay Area community college cybersecurity and ICT programs.

Activities
- Host summer 2026 CyberCamps at 18+ partner colleges and schools, targeting up to 660 student participants across Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced, and All-Female tracks
- Continuously improve CyberCamp curriculum and lesson plans based on annual instructor and student feedback
- Deliver Train-the-Trainer workshops to equip host college and school instructors to lead Introductory and Intermediate camps independently
- Expand the All-Female CyberCamp offering to increase gender equity in the cybersecurity pipeline
- Host virtual Bay Area Regional Cybersecurity Competitions and training workshops to sustain year-round student engagement
- Convert camps to credit/noncredit courses to build long-term sustainability
BACCC Priorities
Building K-14 Pathways into High-Demand ICT Careers
Supports BACCC Goal A (pathways to family-supporting wages) and Goal C (equity in participation and completion) by creating early on-ramps to cybersecurity and ICT careers for middle and high school students, with a direct pipeline into community college programs. By embedding college students as Camp Ambassadors and Teaching Assistants, the program also creates immediate workforce development opportunities for current community college students.

Directly advances Vision 2030’s commitment to bringing high-tech educational opportunities to students who might not otherwise encounter them, with a focus on low-income and historically underrepresented populations. The All-Female camp track and outreach to underserved communities align with the Chancellor’s urgent call to expand STEM pathways for students who have been left out of the technology economy.
