RVPA 2023 Recap

As we reflect on the past year, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your dedication and contributions to our shared journey. Your efforts have been instrumental in shaping the memorable experiences we’ve had together. As we step into the new year, we extend a warm invitation for you to revisit some of the exciting milestones and accomplishments we celebrated in the past twelve months.

SF Fanfest

The Regional Virtual Production Academy (RVPA) stole the spotlight at this year’s Fanfest in San Francisco, captivating over 50,000 enthusiasts in comics, sci-fi, horror, anime, gaming, and cosplay. For three electrifying days, RVPA’s interactive booth featuring a green screen became a hub of creativity and learning. Attendees delved into the world of virtual production and explored limitless possibilities under the guidance of RVPA faculty. 

SRJC Speaker of the Year

SRJC Game Development Program Featured Speaker of the Year The programmer Warren Davis was the person responsible for designing the original Q*Bert arcade game, working alongside graphic artist Jeff Lee, and audio engineer David Thiel at Gottlieb. In recent years, Davis has been active in the retro gaming community, appearing at various events to promote his recent book Creating Q*Bert: and Other Classic Video Arcade Games and sharing stories from Q*Bert’s development. Ohlone College “Hour with a Pro”

Ohlone College hosted their “Hour with a Pro” with Dallas Drapeau, a skilled professional in the digital arts and interactive design, discusses his role in virtual production for movies like Mandalorian and Avatar: The Last Airbender. He highlights the evolution of his career from lighting artist to creating full environments. The conversation covers his journey, the importance of continuous learning, and advice for aspiring professionals in the industry.

November BayICT Tech Talk

During our November BayICT Tech Talk (11/16), we highlighted a recent foundation-funded initiative that connects current and prospective students with employers for paid career-based learning in the film industry through virtual production. The virtual production sector is an emerging technology in many industrial sectors, including health and sports.

Diablo Valley College: Real-Time XR Sport Edge – Accelerator Project 2023. We embarked on a groundbreaking journey that not only pushes the boundaries of technology but also underscores the importance of collaborative academic-industry research in shaping the future of education. While community colleges may not traditionally engage in extensive research activities, the unique curriculum and goals of RVPA make this collaborative approach not just important but critical. 

February Tech Talk w/ Kathryn Brillhart

In our February Tech Talk, we delved deep into Virtual Production with the insightful Kathryn Brillhart. She illuminated the realm of real-time visualization tools within virtual production, shedding light on their pivotal role. These tools empower directors and DPs to breathe life into their visions by visualizing shots and refining ideas within a dynamic 3D space—a game-changer in the pre-production phase.

Silicon Valley Video Summit

koina freeman, RVPA Planning Team member and Laney College VP curriculum developer, was a panelist at the Silicon Valley Video Summit on the topic, Virtual Production in the Real World.  Also on the panel was RVPA Advisory Board member, Eric Weaver, Head of Virtual & Adaptive Production at the Entertainment Technology Center. A consistent theme was raising awareness of the opportunities and the need for preparing a rapidly evolving workforce.
