The start of the new school year is always a time of new beginnings. This year, that’s as true for BACCC as it is for our colleges. We’ve reorganized the BACCC team–I’ll remain in my role as the Regional Director of ICT/DM for the Bay Area. Olivia Herriford will continue to guide the BayICT Partnership and is also leading a project to launch a new Virtual Production program–an emerging career field with great promise.
Our other curricular focus areas this year include Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, and Cybersecurity, and we’ll continue to evolve the Cloud Computing work of the last couple of years. Our overall goal remains the same: Create a diverse and locally-grown tech workforce.
Thanks for helping!

Partner Spotlight
In April, BACCC entered into a partnership with Intel to help Bay Area colleges create and deploy artificial intelligence programs. As part of our agreement, we have licensed, at no charge to our colleges or students, their entire portfolio of AI curricular materials. These materials were originally developed by Intel in collaboration with Chandler Community College, in Arizona. They include individual lessons that can be incorporated into existing curriculum, all the way through a complete associates degree in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
There is a modest training requirement for faculty who would like to use the Intel curricular resources. To meet this requirement on an as-needed basis, 5 of our Bay Area faculty members have now completed a week-long train-the-trainer course. In addition to scheduled breakouts at the WASTC winter conference training event, we hope to be able to provide individual training for interested faculty throughout the year.
As the curriculum is adopted, BACCC will be providing feedback to Intel on our implementation, and on any needed modifications and updates our faculty identify. Our Intel partnership was one of the main topic at the Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics RJV kickoff meeting, at Laney College.
SummerCyber Camp Reflections
The Bay Area Cyber League (BCL), in conjunction with the Bay Area Community College Consortium (BACCC), was so excited to be back and offering IN-PERSON CyberCamps again this summer!
2022 Summer CyberCamps were offered in-person and virtually for our Introductory and Intermediate level camps, and virtually for our Advanced camp.
CyberCampers learned about online hygiene and safety, technology ethics, infrastructure administration, security audits, cryptography, digital and network forensics, and web application exploitation and were rewarded with digital badges for their participation.
While our camps are over, your learning doesn’t have to end!
If you have students who are interested in exploring the wide world of cybersecurity on your own, please visit the Resources available for recommended self-study tracks.
Announcements
NextGen Cyber Talent is a member of the BayICT Partnership, with an overarching goal to close the cyber talent gap with a more diverse workforce.
Last October 2021, NextGen kicked off its completion-incentive grant programs at CCSF and Merritt. NextGen recognized that many community college students have to work and the cost of staying in college goes beyond books and tuition. The grant program will pay students the equivalent of the cost of tuition and books ($350) for every 3-4 unit course leading to a cyber security certificate or AS degree that they complete with a B or better.
NextGen is expanding the program to Cabrillo, De Anza, DVC, Foothill, Las Positas, Monterey Peninsula, Ohlone, and SRJC starting with courses completed Spring 2022. Please share this opportunity with your students. Details on how to register and apply for the program are discussed in this recording of last October’s BayICT Tech Talk announcing the program.
RoadShow
BayICT will be doing a roadshow to reconnect with ICT/DM administrators and faculty at all of our 28 member community colleges. Our objective is to highlight resources and support available via BayICT and also to learn more about how BayICT can better support individual colleges.
Already have a meeting in mind? Share the meeting details via this link and we’ll be sure to join.
