ASCCC: Evaluating Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools in an Academic Setting

Evaluating AI Tools for Education – ASCCC Framework

In Fall 2024, the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) adopted Resolution 108.01, calling for the development of criteria to evaluate AI tools for potential use in education.

In response, ASCCC created a comprehensive framework for assessing AI tools across dimensions such as ethics, pedagogy, usability, and sustainability. The goal is to help faculty and institutions make informed decisions about whether—and how—AI tools should be implemented.

The framework encourages educators to explore questions in areas like:

  • Student Learning & Support – How AI impacts comprehension, retention, and equity across diverse learners.

  • Engagement & Motivation – Whether AI tools foster participation and self-directed learning.

  • Teaching & Pedagogy – How AI supports faculty in planning, assessment, and personalized instruction.

  • Assessment & Feedback – Accuracy, transparency, and timeliness of AI grading and feedback.

  • IDEAA – Impacts on inclusion, diversity, equity, anti-racism, and accessibility.

  • Ethics & Data Privacy – Compliance with privacy laws and transparency of algorithms.

  • Academic Integrity – Strategies to balance AI use while upholding integrity.

  • Integration & Scalability – Compatibility with systems like Canvas, cost-effectiveness, and institutional readiness.

The ASCCC resource also highlights where educators can find official AI tool documentation, government guidance, independent audits, and educator communities to support responsible adoption.
