General Assembly: What Really Leads to AI Job Loss?

As companies race to adopt AI, many hope it’ll boost productivity and reduce costs. But according to new research from SHRM, it’s not automation that’s causing job loss—it’s the failure to properly prepare teams for the change.

Too often, organizations roll out new technology after cutting staff, without equipping the remaining employees with the skills or support they need. The result? Expertise walks out the door, culture weakens, and the productivity gains never quite materialize.

The companies doing it right take a different approach:

  • They train teams before AI adoption, not after.

  • They equip managers to lead through change.

  • They reskill the talent they already have—instead of starting from scratch.

AI doesn’t have to come at the cost of your team. But mistimed or skipped training almost always comes at a cost elsewhere.
