Meeting Theme: Preparing for the Impact of AI on Education and Careers 

Meeting Purpose 

To discuss the BayICT partnership’s ongoing initiatives, provide an update on regional ICT/DM activities, share advancements in AI professional development (AIPD), and identify strategies to engage community college faculty and workforce partners in AI-related changes.

Regional ICT/DM Sector Update 

Presented by Jeff D’Andria, Sub-Regional Director, SF/Peninsula. 

  • Discussed efforts to adapt curriculum and work-based learning to AI-driven job market shifts. 
  • Reported on outcomes from the AI Unconference (115+ attendees). Shared updates on: 

Computing Talent Initiative (CTI): Tech-based internship program with 12 employer partners (e.g., Amazon, Salesforce). 

Tech Sales Jobs Pilot: A non-technical track focused on skill-based hiring, developed with Anthropic and Salesforce 

Salesforce Grant: $1.8M for AI skill development and placement support (rev share via YuPro). 

AI Professional Development (AIPD) Strategy 

Presented by Dann Bergman, Senior Consultant, 66 Training , (for Dan Montoys, AI RJV Project Lead. 

  • Emphasized the critical AI talent gap, citing: 
  • 300% increase in AI hiring demand (Microsoft/LinkedIn 2024 report). – 72% of companies now using AI in operations (McKinsey). 
  • Outlined the continuum of faculty development from AI-reluctant to AI-literate. Described the AIDA Regional Joint Venture’s progress: 

5 Roadshows showcasing AI curriculum development across colleges. Launch of welcome kit and curriculum guidelines. 

Laney College Hackathon for student involvement 

Formation of an Industry Advisory Committee (first meeting: May 30). Scheduled workshops, talks, and faculty PD opportunities in partnership with Google for Education. 

Discussion 

Key questions posed to attendees: 

  • Are AIPD principles already being applied at your institution? 
  • What AI impacts are partners and the workforce experiencing? 
  • What strategies can be used to prepare and engage faculty and employers? Discussion Themes:
  • Need for stronger alignment between faculty training and employer expectations. Importance of real-world applications and employer-informed curriculum design. Value of cross-sector collaboration (community colleges, industry, and workforce boards). 

Next Steps and Action Items 

  1. Faculty Support: Expand targeted professional development to address AI integration reluctance. 
  2. Curriculum Tools: Develop toolkits outlining AI curriculum development processes and timelines. 
  3. Workforce Alignment: Continue skills-based hiring pilots and refine career prep based on hiring manager input. 
  4. Cross-System Collaboration: Plan and promote the “Ridiculously Hopeful Futures” pre-conference event for CCAOE. 
  5. Assessment: Begin quarterly reviews of AI PD efforts and feedback-driven refinements. 

Conclusion 

The BayICT Partnership continues to lead collaborative efforts in AI integration across community colleges. The meeting emphasized the importance of shared leadership between education and industry to prepare learners for an AI-driven workforce.
